deborahsweeney is a high end, youth oriented, New Zealand women’s wear label. Her clever designs are a colourful, eclectic and feminine mix of casual and tailored silhouettes.
Deborah Sweeney pieces are infinitely wearable and made with carefully chosen natural fibres and high quality fabrics. Collections often have a vintage feel, or are retro inspired, with much attention given to detailing.
Deborah returned to New Zealand to establish her label in 2002, after working for Jill Stuart in New York and designing for High Street stores, including Topshop and H&M, in London. She previously completed a Fashion Diploma at Massey University in Wellington, and also studied accessories at the London Royal College of Fashion.
Her husband and business partner, Niels Meyer-Westfeld, completed a Masters degree at London’s St Martins College. As a graphic designer and photographer, he has worked for companies such as MTV and The Body Shop, later running his own business in the UK.
With their combined skill base, the couple have created a distinctly individual worldwide brand, designing everything in-house, from unique fabric prints to the label’s look-books and campaign imagery.
In 2006, Deborah Sweeney won the coveted Air New Zealand Export Award. The collection is now stocked in select boutiques around the globe – from Australia to Japan and the USA.
Deborah Sweeney pieces are consistently featured in key fashion publications, including Vogue, Women’s Wear Daily, i-D, Nylon, Jane, Lucky and Elle Magazine. In 2010, the label was profiled in the book New Zealand Fashion Design by Angela Lassig, Senior Curator at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
Most recently, Deborah has started designing their new ‘Little Sweeney’ range, for kids aged two years and under.
Deborah and Niels live in Wellington with their son Lars and cat Beavis.
